Direct Answer
If TDS is filed under the wrong Assessment Year, you cannot claim it in your current ITR. You must ask the deductor to file a revised TDS return correcting the Financial Year/Assessment Year. Alternatively, you must carry forward the credit to the matching year.
The Financial Year vs Assessment Year Confusion
A common clerical error by deductors is confusing FY and AY. If an invoice is paid in March 2026 (FY 25-26, AY 26-27), but the accountant selects FY 26-27 while filing the TDS return, the credit will shift to the next year's Form 26AS.
The Resolution
- Check your Form 26AS for both the current year and the subsequent year to locate the missing entry.
- The Income Tax portal restricts claiming TDS from future years. The only viable solution is for the deductor to log into TRACES and file a correction statement modifying the year.
