Direct Answer
Under the Flat Rate Scheme (FRS), you pay a fixed percentage of your gross turnover (including VAT) to HMRC. You must reconcile your total bank receipts (gross) against the FRS turnover declaration. You do not reconcile individual Input VAT on expenses, as it cannot be reclaimed.
The Gross Turnover Trap
A common mistake under FRS is calculating the flat rate percentage on net sales. HMRC requires the percentage to be applied to the VAT-inclusive total.
Bank Statement Checking
- Add up all trading receipts in the bank statement.
- Ensure this matches your FRS turnover.
- Note: If you receive bank interest or COVID/grant support, these are generally outside the scope of FRS turnover and should be excluded from the flat rate calculation.
