Direct Answer

To reconcile your BAS, ensure that the Total Sales (G1) aligns with your bank deposits, adjusted for GST. If you operate on a cash basis, your G1 plus GST should closely mirror your total trading bank credits for the quarter.

The ATO Data Matching

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) uses sophisticated data matching. They receive data from banks, merchant facilities, and crypto exchanges. If your reported G1 (Total Sales) on the BAS is lower than your electronic deposits, you may receive a 'Please explain' letter.

Common Reconciliation Adjustments

When reconciling your bank statement to your BAS, look out for:

  • GST-Free Sales: Exports or basic food items (reportable, but no GST).
  • Input Taxed Sales: Financial supplies or residential rent.
  • Non-Business Income: Money transferred from personal accounts or tax refunds.

The Clearing Account

For businesses using clearing accounts (like a Stripe or Afterpay holding account), ensure you declare the gross sales amount at G1, not just the net payout that hits your main bank account.
